Dental whitening

Tooth whitening is today one of the most extensively studied aesthetic treatments in dentistry. Its modern use developed from the 1980s onward with the introduction of peroxide-based protocols for at-home application. For many years now, scientific evidence has confirmed that it is a safe treatment when performed under professional supervision and with appropriate concentrations.

A widely cited literature review published in 2006 (1) already concluded that peroxide-based agents do not cause clinically significant structural alterations to enamel when used correctly. More recent analyses continue to support these findings. In particular, a systematic review published in 2023 in Clinical Oral Investigations (2) once again highlights the safety and effectiveness of professionally supervised tooth whitening, noting that the main side effect remains temporary and reversible tooth sensitivity.

When properly indicated and monitored by a dental professional, tooth whitening therefore represents a conservative approach that respects dental tissues and is supported by solid scientific evidence.
