8. Periodontal procedures
Prevention & occlusion and
TMJ problems
Periodontal
treatments & Oral surgery
A periodontal
treatment as well as pre-prosthetic surgery
is often mandatory to prepare the tissues
for further restorative procedures.
Such procedures aim to restore tissue health
or promote a better tissue configuration
before receiving aesthetic restorations.
Healthy tissues are the prerequisite for
long term success! The extraction of third
molars (wisdom teeth) is often indicated
to avoid further problems such as inter-dental
decay, formation of periodontal pockets
or local chronic and acute infections. However,
when third molars are accessible to regular
hygiene and possibly also to minor restorative
procedures, we do not propose their extraction.
Gingivitis is a common inflammatory affection
of the gums around teeth (but also implants)
which can be easily controlled with more
efficient and regular personal hygiene measures.
Our dedicated hygienists will help you get
rid of this reversible disease, which can
over time, or in patients with specific
risk, develop into periodontitis, a more
severe problem, leading to irreversible
bone loss. Different forms of periodontitis
are today recognized according to clinical
and microbiological features. In collaboration
with our hygienists, specialists in periodontics
who work near the GSC will offer their expertise
to solve this eventual problem, if necessary.
Prevention &
Hygiene
Prevention plays a predominant
role in modern quality dentistry. Not only
do we aim to restore teeth and give our
patients a more beautiful smile, but we
also care about their long term oral and
dental health. The whole team will therefore
focus on the individual risk assessment
for decays and periodontal diseases, which
will allow us to adapt initial therapy and
maintenance programs to each patient’s
need.
Occlusion
& TMJ problems
A busy & stressful life can also have
an important impact on our teeth. Actually,
over the last 10 years, parfunctional habits
such as bruxism and clenching have increased
by about 100%! This condition is responsible
for abnormal functional stresses which lead
to excessive tooth wear, fracture and failure
of restorations, as well as TMJ (Temporo-mandibular
joint) problems. We take this into very
serious consideration and therefore will
evaluate carefully any sign of parafunction
to integrate this risk factor into our treatment
plan. We may decide to take some specific
preventive measures in the form of night
guards or other appliances which help to
protect your teeth as well as new restorations.
Such measures are of the highest significance
for long-term restoration success and maintenance.
